Founded Joint Stock Theatre group in 1974 (of which our very own Mark Wing-Davey was a member). From 1979 to 1993 he was Artistic Director of The Royal Court Theatre. In 1993 he founded the touring company, Out of Joint.

His work as a Director has overwhelmingly been with new writing, and he has commissioned and directed first productions by many of the England's leading writers. Some significant productions Max directed include: Cloud NineTop Girls, Blue Heart, and Serious Money by Caryl Churchill; Shopping and Fucking by Mark Ravenhill; Our Country’s Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker; The Permanent Way and Fanshen by David Hare; Talking to Terrorists by Robin Soans; and Bang Bang Bang by Stella Feehily.

Max Stafford-Clark and playwright Stella Feehily conducted a three-day workshop on the Joint Stock method and new plays with our second-year students.
