Scene Shop Usage

NYU has moved to remote instruction for the spring and summer semesters. Production loans and shops are not accepting appointments during this time.

Shop Usage Request Procedures:

  • Scene Shop Reservation Requests should be made at least two weeks in advance, by filling out a reservation request form.

  • Usage is on a first-come, first-serve basis, so we recommend putting in your request as soon as possible.

  • Possible times are MTWRF from 10am-6pm and 7-10:30pm, and Sun. 10a-6p, but we do not work all evenings and weekends.

  • We will respond as soon as possible, typically within 1-2 business days.

  • Last minute requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Eligible Shop Users:

  • Tisch Drama Production Personnel

  • Current P&D Students

  • Production Personnel of Tisch Drama Studios

Usage Guidelines:

  • All work must take place while scene shop staff or grad assistants are present.  Possible hours are MTWRF from 10am-6pm and 7-10:30pm, and Sun. 10a-6p, but we do not work all evenings and weekends.

  • Unsafe work practices, failure to follow instructions of shop staff and grad assistants, inappropriate behavior, failure to clean up at end of day and end of usage period, removal of tools from shop, inappropriate material usage, and failure to report damaged tools are grounds for immediate loss of scene shop usage privileges.

  • No one may use tools or engage in any other hazardous activity while alone in the shop.

  • It is the responsibility of the shop user to work safely and supervise their crews appropriately.

  • PPE must be worn whenever appropriate, per industry best practices.  Safety glasses, face shields, and in-ear and out-of-ear hearing protection are available in the shop.  Arrangements for any additional PPE are the responsibility of the shop user. Headphones may not be worn.

  • Music may be played at a reasonable volume using the shop sound system.

  • Spray paint may not be used anywhere in or around the shop.

  • At all times, shop user is expected to behave respectfully towards shop staff, grad assistants, workstudy, and ITP students, as well as shop tools and infrastructure.  Instructions of shop staff and grad assistants must be adhered to.

  • Dust collection systems must be turned on whenever using saws; ensure vent of relevant saw is open, and other vents are closed.

  • Spray paint may not be used anywhere in or around the shop.

  • Shop must be protected during activities such as painting, hudson spraying, welding, etc.

  • All tools must remain in the scene shop.

  • Immediately report any damaged tools to Kat.

Materials Usage:

  • It is the responsibility of the shop user to provide all materials, hardware, and consumables required for their project (drop cloths, flame-retardant treatments, welding wire, bolts, staples, construction adhesive, duvetyne, gaff tape, etc.).

  • Scrap wood located in scrap racks may be used by prior arrangement.
