Kay Cummings

Recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Medal, 1996, NYU. Attended the preparatory program at the Juilliard School. Studied acting with Charlotte Perry, Herbert Berghof, Seth Glassman; dance with Pearl Lang, Harriet Ann Gray, Matt Mattox; and voice with John Mace. Has played leading roles off Broadway and in national tours, repertory theatre, and stock; has appeared in television soaps, series, and commercials; and has worked in major films, as well as nightclub and cabaret revues. Has created and directed works performed at the Joseph Papp Public Theater; P.S. 122; BACA; the 18th Street Playhouse; La Mama E.T.C.; Manhattan Punchline; Triplex; Dance Theatre Workshop; Lincoln Center's Serious Fun Series; Philadelphia's Painted Bride; and L.A.'s Cast Theatre. Work has been featured on Alive from Off-Center on PBS. Has served as an artistic adviser at The Yard, an artist's collective.  Recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts Interarts Program, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Consortium. Has served on the selection committee for Fulbright Fellowships in Dance.  Was the Chair of the Department from 1992-2002.  Curator for Dance at Symphony Space for 10 years. Recent projects include creation of works presented at the Joyce Theatre, Dance Theatre Workshop, Symphony Space, Jacob's Pillow, and The Southern Theatre in Minneapolis. Working as dramaturge with Tiffany Mills on her new work. Working as mentor/editor with Ellis Wood on her new work. On Charlotte Boye-Christensen's NOW Board of Advisors. On Gibney Advisory Board.
