K-Salaam, born Kayvon Sarfehjooy, is a DJ/Producer from Minneapolis, MN. After releasing a slew of critically acclaimed mixtapes, including The Hands of Time, and Real DJs Do Real Things, he joined with Beatnick (Nick Phillips) to form Beatnick & K-Salaam Productions. Their first LP, The World Is Ours, was released in 2006 and re-released by VP Records as Whose World is This in 2008. The project fused Hip-Hop with Reggae and featured artists such as Talib Kweli, Kardinal Offishall, Dead Prez, Papoose and Trey Songz.
Beatnick & K-Salaam went on to produce for artists including Keane, Trey Songz, K’naan, Talib Kweli, Lil Wayne, Young Buck, Buju Banton and Hollywood Undead. The duo traveled to Brazil and produced Emicida’s LP Doozicabraba e a Revolução Silenciosa, released in 2011. Beatnick & K-Salaam have gone on to produce many more tracks for Emicida, including “Zica Vai La“ as well as “Levanta e Anda” which was featured on the FIFA 15 soundtrack.
The duo produced all of the songs on Murs & Fashawn’s album This Generation, Rael’s Ainda Bem Que Eu Segui as Batidas do Meu Coração and Smif-n-Wessun’s Born and Raised. Additionally, they produced the single “Genocide Highway” for rapper M1 which featured Nas.
Beatnick & K-Salaam have had their music placed in TV shows, commercials, movies and video games. Most recently, their music was featured in FIFA 15, NBA Live 15, NCIS: LA, VH1’s Hit the Floor and Fox TVs Red Band Society.
As a DJ, K-Salaam has performed at shows and venues across the United States, as well as in Brazil and Jamaica, sharing the stage with Rage Against the Machine, Wu-Tang Clan, Lauryn Hill, Snoop Dogg and others. K-Salaam was the official DJ of the East Coast leg of the Rock the Bells Music Festival in 2011 and 2012. He also has done many music production seminars around the globe, including a seminar in Sao Paulo, Brazil, as a part of Vice TV’s The Creator’s Project.
